What Are You?: A Surprise Pop-Up Book
Published in Hardcover by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (September, 1999)
Authors: Keith Faulkner and Stephen Holmes
Average review score:

What are you?
Our 2 1/2 year old received this book as a gift. Every night we read it at least twice to him. He knows what all the animals are called and what the baby animals will turn into. He calls this his "butterfly book". We absolutely love it! Very durable as well.

Welcome surprises on every page!
"What are you?" that is the question the animals are asking their baby animal friends...the answers are revealed as you open the flaps to display colorful and exciting pop-ups of full grown animals. In front of your eyes a cygnet is transformed into a swan, a joey into a kangaroo and a nymph into a dragonfly. The expressions of wonder and surprise on the animals faces are adorable. It's large size, vibrant illustrations and it's content would make an excellent addition to any home or public library!

Who Am I God (Lg Prt)

Author: Holmes
Average review score:

personal dialogue with God( yet?) so universal
It is a series of dialogues with God ( within the background of Bible) by a women on every aspect that is affecting as a mother, wife, career woman; except few, every one find it easy to read through and will derive some meaning; a perfect book for gift; It is not moralistic; humanistic. One should not categorise it as woman oriented since the other is a woman; Should we say David's psalms for men only? or Job's cry for men onyl; The book belong to this category in its theme. Even in Bible,we come across the woman at Jacob's well who may be the first to carry the Good news to her village; For some interested to look for similar themes in Hindusim, I can draw attention to Kunti's prayers; Meera's Bhajans; Gopika's geetham ( Bhagavatam). There are exactly same in the focus, but they are conversation with God. Even in India, a modern women will find easier to identify with the Majorie Holmes rather than characters in Hindu puranas; So Who AM I, God? is a good gift for any boby ( male or female). She seeks support from God to deal with the question of fatal attraction. She seeks guidance from God to deal with depression,divorce... She seeks support for quitting smoking. So....

Ageless & timeless as our cry for guidance from our Creator
Who Am I God, by Marjorie Holmes was given to me in 1970 after the birth of my first child. It has guided me, comforted and given words to my deepest feeling. It covers the universal joys and challanges of life including the death of a child. The Bible and this book consoled me after our daughter died in 1993. It is ageless and timeless, whispering the words we speak in the silence of our hearts to our Creator. I am purchasing a copy for my daughter who is a young mother.

The Young John Muir: An Environmental Biography
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Wisconsin Pr (01 January, 1999)
Author: Steven J. Holmes
Average review score:

Masterfully, Intricately-Done Biography
Environmental History is a growing and much-needed field of Academia. John Muir, a peaceful yet titanic figure in America's own enviromental movement, like Rachel Carson, like, in his own right-Teddy Roosevelt, is a Pioneer of this movement. Professor Steven J.Holmes. Lecturer in History and Literature at Harvard University, has produced a deeply poignant book about this deeply thoughtful man, i.e. in Muir's "formative" years, wherein his Scottish roots clashed, then melded and germinated beautifully with the ever-more wild Wisconsin of Muir's American years. Yet this child of Dunbar, Scotland, was to, even at the "tadpole's age" of five, begin having transformative and even existential experiences, mostly derived from and spawned by the "Wilderness," by Nature, but too by Muir's love for his beloved mother. According to Holmes' carefully-documented and sourced biographical history of Muir, the young Lad had, even at a VERY young(before age 2)age, an UNCANNY ability to interact with, respond to, and above all, Deeply TRUST his Mother-especially, began when John Muir was just two months of age. Yet to me, with Mother Earth being THE all-powerful and nurturing, kindly force that this species MUST needs be recognize(i.e., Patriarchal societies are NOW too destructive, for Mother Earth to sustain, much longer), these Youthful, formative instinctive developments on Muir's part would become incredibly important in and to that "ecocentric perspective,"(182) as Holmes terms it, that would dominate this quixotically wild but peace-loving man's entire Life's viewpoint, all to the LONG-TERM betterment(IF we can only LISTEN-NOW, if not SOONER) of this Nation-State, and this species.

An Excellent Biography!
I have been an admirer of John Muir since I was a young child. This book is excellent in the way in which Steven J. Holmes captures the essence of a man who continues to inspire persons of all ages and backgrounds with his life. It offers intimate glimpses into Muir's experiences as well as a new perspective into understanding Muir as a universalist humanitarian and hero.

2001 Index of Economic Freedom
Published in Paperback by The Heritage Foundation and Dow Jones & Co (15 January, 2001)
Authors: Kim Holmes, Gerald O'Driscoll, Kim R. Holmes, and Melanie Kirkpatrick
Average review score:

A Noble Effort that Lays Bare its Assumptions...
Economic freedom may or may not be the way to spiritual or political happiness, but it certainly seems that it's one of the keys to economic development. Although it's difficult to prove once and for all precisely what economic environments are best for countries, this series attempts to get at the keys. I also believe that if they were to change their opinions on a measure or two, they would have no hesitancy to revise or amend their criteria. Whatever flaw their analyses have, it is a monumental effort they put together each year, and at the very least it's a benchmark for people to debate about. There's information and opinion in here that you can't get easily from anywhere else at this price...

For those that prefer alternative ways of thinking about the world, or have competing models to try, this can set up a good basis for comparison. I use the country scores in this volume to influence my own personal investing strategy.

221 B: Studies in Sherlock Holmes (Otto Penzler's Sherlock Holmes Library)
Published in Paperback by Otto Penzler Books (February, 1994)
Author: Vincent Starrett
Average review score:

"What Watson never told"
Baring-Gould has taken it upon himself to explain what the childhood of Sherlock Holmes was like, as well as what really happened during the Great Hiatus, Holmes vs. the Ripper, and even Dr. Watson's first wife. (ACD wrote but never published a play in which Watson traveled to San Francisco and met Constance Adams in 1884.) A nice touch is the timeline at the end of the book, starting from the meeting of Holmes' parents, and an index of books and magazines from 1920-1960. Basically, a necessity for true Sherlockians.

.50-Caliber Rifle Construction Manual : With Easy-to-Follow Full-Scale Drawings
Published in Paperback by Paladin Press (September, 2002)
Author: Bill Holmes
Average review score:

Big game hunters best friend.
This book is extremely precise and accurate. If you have a lot of spare time and want a .50 caliber rifle to hunt those larger animals (im talkin buffalo from 150ft away with a singe shot, I have done it before with my Barrett M82A1), this book is a Godsend. I am working on another project which is takeing up my spare cash right now so I am not currently constructing one of these, but I think this is next on my list to build >:)

This book has diagrams and detailed instructions on exactly what to do. You do require a little knowledge in gunsmithing but nothing that you cant learn from manuals that you can get at your local library. A great buy, I'm glad I got a copy, and you will be too whether you just want a good read or are actually going to build one ;-)

Abandoned Farm And Connie's Mistake (Notable American Authors)
Published in Library Binding by Reprint Services Corp (January, 1905)
Authors: Mary J. Holmes and Mary Jane Holmes
Average review score:

Welcome to MJ Holmes
I started reading Mary J. Holmes books because she was one of my grandmother's favorite writers. An extremely prolific and popular romance novelist from the mid- to late- eighteen hundreds, her books are warm melodramatic love stories full of charming period details. Although never classed as literature, as such, I find her writing consistently compelling and readable. To curl up under a warm quilt with one of her books remains one of my key anti-depressants.

The Abandoned Farm tells the story of a mistaken inheritance, and an old wrong. A spirited young lady goes undercover as a serving girl in what properly should be her family home. She finds more than she expects in the young master of the house.

Connie's Mistake is the stronger story, and details the dark secret that keeps Connie from being able to marry her childhood sweetheart Kenneth. Some of Holmes' favorite themes-- indulgence in alcohol leading to dissipation and death, pure love, and mistaken identities.

Accomplice: A Comedy Thriller

Author: Rupert Holmes
Average review score:

Funny and Suspenseful
This is a great play -- it's hilarious and genuinely suspenseful, and it's guaranteed to keep audiences guessing until the end.

If you think you may have a chance to see it on stage, don't read it first. Enjoy the surprises as they were meant to be enjoyed -- by seeing a performance.

Otherwise, read it. It's awesome!

The Adventure of the Detected Detective: Sherlock Holmes in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake (Contributions to the Study of World Literature)
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (June, 1998)
Author: William D. Jenkins
Average review score:

Brilliant analysis of Joyce's use of Holmes in FW
I was a friend of the late author's and therefore recuse myself from any sort of critical review, but am anxious to let others know of its availability. It is a model of Joycean analysis, in my opinion, written in an elegant, spare style and with great good humor. He has made a significant discovery that should excite and illumine both Sherlockians (Bill was a member of the BSI and prodigious contributor to the Baker Street Journal) and Wakers.

The Adventure of the Speckled Band (Adventures of Sherlock Holmes)
Published in Paperback by Troll Assoc (August, 1982)
Author: David Eastman
Average review score:

A good mystery
I read the Adventure of the Speckled Band in 8th grade in English class, and I was plesently surprised to see how good it is. The stories I usually read in class are boring but this was very intresting. Holems is once again faced with a confusing mystery. This time a young woman's sister has just been murdered, and Holmes and Watson must find the killer before he kills again. This was the first Sherlock Holmes mystery I've ever read but it most definatly won't be my last!
